Blue Bird of Happiness...

You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair…Chinese proverb

The symbol of a bluebird as the harbringer of happiness is found in many cultures and may date back thousands of years. One of the oldest examples (found on oracle bone inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty, 1766-1122 BCE) is from pre-modern China, where the bluebird was the messenger bird of Xi Wangmu, the 'Queen Mother of the West' who began life as a fearsome goddess and Immortal. By the Tang Dynasty (618-906 CE) she had evolved into a Daoist fairy queen and the protector/patron of "singing girls dead women, novices, nuns, adepts and priestesses...women [who] stood outside the roles prescribed for women in the traditional Chinese family".

A Nude Rose...

Life Book 2015, Week 36, led by Donna Downey.  We are to draw a nude showing strength.

I love this poem by JJ and used it as my inspiration:

A nude lady rose,
plucked as if her life is due heavens course.
To be laid upon a barren corpse.
Dying with the gift to still be alive.
Kissing the dead as she displays her color of red,
a fiery contrast upon a marbled breast.
Her Radiance among the pale of skin,
gives her a peace be if one in just, within.
Her only place,
to give color to the dead of any race.
Herself dying,
the irony of living freshly cut.

Mother Nature...

Life Book 2015, Week 34, led by Alena Hennessy.  We are to paint our muse.

I wasn't thinking Egyptian, Greek, Roman goddesses - actually the first thing that popped into my head was Mother Nature.  (My husband kept coming into my studio as I was drawing my muse - I wonder why?!)

Letting Go...

Life Book 2015, Week 32, led by Tamara LaPorte, the theme is "You Are Wise."  As much as I hate to admit it, I'm not a kid anymore.  If I don't let go of the past junk that gives me the heebie jeebies now, when will I?  Can you relate?

Short Stories...

Life Book 2015, Week 29, led by Danielle Donaldson.  We are to cut up random words and place into a container - telling short stories - add a little drawing too - of course!

Evolution

Life Book 2015, Week 28, led by Tamara Laporte.  We are to create a collage using magazine pages and paint over it.

Combination of torn book and magazine pages, washi tape, image transfer..not sure how I'll make that arm work...scale is off...should have thought this through more before gluing it down...

acrylic paint, pencil marks, handwriting...still not happy with that arm...

I keep messing with that arm and hand...

Okay - the arm is history...more collage and painted birds...ah, that feels better!  This drawing evolved over the course of several days.  No drawing is so precious that it cannot be painted over.

ATC Swap

I received art swap ATCs from Kim Hetherington today.  Each one is a gem.  Kim generously made me 3 - what a lucky diva am I!

Princess Warrior

Life Book 2015, Week 26, led by Andrea Gomoll.  We are to create a Princess Warrior incorporating things we love or that define us.

Crazy I know - but I love creating layers for my backgrounds.

Lots of paint

My Warrior Princess likes her ink!

Earrings are a must!

What defines me.  First and foremost I am a fiber artist.  I love to sew, draw, paint, read, watch birds from my studio window and, of course, take photographs!

Two For Me and Two For You

Life Book 2015, Week 24, we are to make Artist Trading Cards to swap.  The theme is "Being Brave/Courage."

ATC swaps are fun.  These little gems measure 2.5" x 3.5" - quick to make, easy to mail.

What I did:
transfer and collage magazine pages

addition of gesso, water soluble crayons, marks

acrylic paint added; drawing too.  I would be very brave indeed to wear tights such as these!

I made two cards to swap as well as a set to keep.

I hope my swap partner likes these ATCs.

stencils...

Life Book 2015, Week 25, led by Lynzee Lynx.  We are to create a background using handmade stencils.

Sometimes creating art can be more about finding out which techniques I don't like or at least it works that way for me.  I love using my hands - getting them dirty - creating art.  Cutting out stencils doesn't do "it" for me.  I have tons of ready made stencils which I really like and use often.

I made marks on substrate; added acrylic paint

added ready made stencils with spray dyes

created a simple hand made stencil

black gesso and acrylic paints over my own stencil; sprayed with water; acrylic paint added.

This background will be used one day - as soon as my muse gets wind of it!

Not just another pretty face...

Life Book 2015, Week 24, led by Juliette Crane.  We are to create a background and paint a face.

Realism is not my thing.  I love making goofy faces.

My Angel...

Life Book 2015, Week 23, led by Tamara Laporte.  We are to draw a male angel.

My husband, Richard, came to mind immediately.  He is the sweetest most generous man I know.  When I showed him my initial drawing, he said "hey, that's me!"  He's especially pleased with it now that it's finished since it makes him look at least 40 years younger!

Drawing men is difficult...at least for me it is.  I tried adding a few laugh lines and creases, but that wasn't working out too well.  Notice the Habitat for Humanity logo on his shirt.  (Habitat is Richard's favorite volunteer organization.  He's been helping build home for 20+ years.)

Bed Head/Sleep Patterns

Life Book 2015, Week 22, led by Jeanne Oliver.  We are to draw a face using charcoal and white gesso incorporating patterns into the work.

I don't want to name names, but last night someone in my house was SNORING (and it wasn't me - at least last night it wasn't me).  Finally, I moved to another room and slept on a roll-a-way bed we bought for an occasion such as this.

This morning I felt out of sorts and tired...  Luckily, the snoring is not a nightly occurrence.  Tonight I want to sleep in my bed :-)

Apple of My Eye...

Life Book 2015, Week 21 led by Lynn Whipple and Tamara Laporte.  Working in lights and darks, we are to draw an apple.

I'm not sure if my dark side or light side came out while drawing my apple...you decide.

Making My Mark...

Lifebook 2015, Week, 20, led by Jenny Doh.  We are to make marks in any fashion we choose.

Acrylic paint, ink, gesso added to background  in a slap dash fashion.   I could see a face in top ink blot. With that in mind, I thought what would happen if I were to "connect" a few blots and draw a figure using the tip of an ink dropper and India ink...

Wake up!

Life Book 2015, Week 19, led by Jessica Swift.  We are to make hand carved stamps for a journal page.  The theme is contrast - light/dark.  (I paraphrased a favorite quote by Andy Andrews.)

Don't Overthink It...

Life Book 2015, Week, 17, led by Jenny Lee Wentworth.  We are to create an expressive drawing using only paint, brush, charcoal - no drawing beforehand - just go for it.

Nothing is too precious - add a little more paint - won't hurt anything - might even help!
