It Feels Like Cheatin'

Life Book 2013 Week 9 is lead by Danita.  We are to paint over a magazine photo.

It feels like cheatin' - well, almost.  If Frida Kahlo did it, I guess I can too!

I found this magazine photo in my stash of inspiration photos.  Adhere photo to substrate; cover with a layer of gesso.

Using water soluble crayons and gesso, paint photo.  Add background.  I figure if I kept throwing enough color and gesso on it, it would eventually please me.  I don't know who the model in the magazine is, but my rendering reminds me of  Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife).

I'm Stumped...

Life Book 2013 - Week 8 led by Jane Davenport.  Jane is all about fashion and drawing and being brave.   She has an "unstumpification technique" - if you are unfamiliar with the term (I was!) check out Jane's website.

I used these fashion photos for my inspiration.

Shoe Tree...

We have a lovely ficus tree in our side yard.  It contracted white fly disease and shed most of its leaves.  It has been treated and happily is on its way back to good health.  The barren branches bugged me though - brilliant idea - dress it up!

Steps 1, 2 and 3 - run around town to thrift shops and buy as many cool shoes as possible - size doesn't matter since I'll never wear them - drill drainage and hanging holes; water proof shoes.
Step 4 - hang them from the tree branches

Step 5 - explain to the neighbors what a shoe tree is - then enjoy the yard art!
Keeping my fingers crossed that neighborhood kids don't steal/"borrow" the shoes!

All Dressed Up...

A Valentine's Day drawing from my book.

Valentine luncheon napkin adhered to book page, painted, stamped.  Combination of water colors and acrylic paint for the young girl.

Sitting on the stool I recently purchased.

I choose to ignore all the things wrong with this little painting and simply enjoy all that is good.  She is a sweetie pie!

Fear Not...

Week 6 of Life Book 2013 is led by Tamara Laporte.  We are to celebrate our courage and bravery by choosing an animal we associate with.

I chose a pelican.  I chose it because often we both take on more than we can chew - except then we do!  Many times I fear I will never accomplish what I set out to do - it's too much, I don't have time, I have no ideas...and then inspiration strikes and...I can, I will, I do!

Draw a full figure; cover with watercolor mask (which I did not have.  I used Elmer's rubber cement instead - it worked, but took what seemed like forever to dry.  It was still tacky when I sprayed the paint.)  We were to draw an animal, cut it out and use as a stencil (both negative and positive space).  Spray and splatter ink - I made my own with water and air brush paint.  Remove mask, paint figure.
